故事主要围绕方家一家人展开，方家以参茸海味店为祖业，十多年均由长女方沛琪（汪明荃）主理，现今发展已上轨道。琪一向是方家支柱，在外坚守祖业；在内则姐兼父职，对一向醉心于演艺事业的妹方沛恩（毛舜筠）及甚受方母宠爱的弟方沛辉，均严加管教，但却关怀备至，对母曾丽卿（谭倩红）则非常孝顺；而与方父老朋友兼海味店老伙计林汉忠（胡枫），感情甚佳，忠更视琪为契女。 琪欲放下事业、家庭的包袱与拍拖多年的男友结婚，却料不到男友已另结新欢，琪悲愤之余，决定提出分手。琪情变之时，幸得一位因工作而认识的朋友方咏诗（李司棋）开解，彼此后来更成好友。此时，诗母冯贵娥（南红）由美返港，透露诗与琪其实为同父异母的姐妹，二人均感晴天霹雳。 诗与琪本性格相投，二人亦惺惺相惜，然上代错综复杂之恩怨，加上重重误会，却把二人推到互不相容的地步，在事业及感情上均有纠葛。。Victor, an unemployed film director, his wife just died and left him a 9-year-old son.
