故事发生在繁华的大都市北京，向导出版社中，汇聚了来自五湖四海的年轻人们，他们共同住在一幢筒子楼里，工作生活相互纠缠交织。研究生沙新（张国立 饰）对于现状很是不满，因为他们的生活条件实在是太差了，可是，除了他，似乎并没有人对糟糕的环境发出异议，这令沙新感到十分震惊。 野心勃勃的美术编辑季子（剧雪 饰）知道自己不可能一辈子都待在这小小的出版社里，在外面，有着更广阔的的世界和无限的机遇。沙新的妻子怀孕来到北京待产，同屋门小刚（罗二洋 饰）只得搬进了冒守财（冯远征 饰）的屋子。冒守财一心想要挤走门小刚，他抓住了这个机会，在社里闹出了一场不小的风波。。1947.
