Greece, in the 1920's, is occupied by the Turks. The country is in turmoil with entire villages uprooted. The site of the movie is a Greek village that conducts a passion play each year. The leading citizens of the town, under the auspices of the Patriarch, choose those that will play the parts in the Passion. A stuttering shepherd is chosen to play Jesus. The town butcher (who wanted to be Jesus) is chosen as Judas. The town prostitute is chosen as Mary Magdalene. The rest of the disciples are also chosen. As the movie unfolds, the Passion Play becomes a reality. A group of villagers, uprooted by the war and impoverished, arrive at the village led by their priest. The wealthier citizens of the town want nothing with these people and manipulate a massacre. In the context of the 1920's each of the characters plays out their biblical role in actuality.。故事发生在当代的北京。老工人周洪涛（张福元 饰）眼下最大的心愿就是给三十岁的儿子乐天（任重 饰）买套经适房，让他赶紧结婚。乐天是剧院的舞美设计，女友安如意（彭杨 饰）告诉他，母亲要来北京视察他们的婚前准备，可房子汽车还没有着落。乐天无奈辞职，与好友许安波（赵锦焘 饰）、张晓舟（尹健 饰）成立了一家名为《三十而立》的文化企划公司，他们决心干出点名堂，让各自的女人们看看老公的本事。但他们三人秉性则大不相同，乐天是一个典型的理想主义者，做事尽往好处想。许安波出身农民家庭，做事一根筋，凡事讲究现得利，不见兔子不撒鹰。而有知识有理想的张晓舟在与二人合作中因种种原因不得不放弃自己的主张。公司开张不久，就在同行不正当竞争中破产，周洪涛又突然离世，只剩下乐天和一屁股债务......。
