Looking to authority figures he encounters along the way — including his eventual cellmate, Gene (LaBeouf) — Henry’s journey leads him down a road of manipulation and ethical uncertainty.。1925年，高逢春和女友何莉从英国留学归来，立志医学救国。他们来到闽西山城定州开办贫民救济诊室。在望江楼上，高逢春、何莉与幼年好友王展飞何新近结识的学生运动领袖方亮就如何救国展开辩论。在反革命的血雨腥风中，高逢春的宗教启蒙老师查理脱去了伪装，王展飞背叛了革命，高逢春的医院被砸毁，何莉也被骗回上海。经过一系列的变化，高逢春医学救国的理想被彻底粉碎，在血与火的洗礼中，他获得了新生，投入了革命的洪流。。
