Somewhere in Myanmar is a forest rich in amber and controlled by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA). Most of its inhabitants work in a mine, digging the earth night and days in the hope of finding the precious ore that will get them out of poverty. But on top of the excruciating hardship of the work, they also have to fear an attack from the army.。故事发生在二十世纪三十年代初期，莉莲（简·方达 Jane Fonda 饰）前往维也纳寻找自己曾经的好友茱莉亚（瓦妮莎·雷德格瑞夫 Vanessa Redgrave 饰），到达目的地之后，莉莲才知道，茱莉亚因为和法西斯支持者发生了激烈冲突而受伤住进了医院，之后不知所踪。 在莉莲回归自己的生活之后，她意外的收到了茱莉亚的来信，在信中，茱莉亚请求莉莲帮助自己投运五万美元给反纳粹组织，尽管这一举动在当时意味着巨大的危险，但是莉莲还是答应了茱莉亚，最终，两个多年未见的好友在柏林重逢。然而，没过多久，莉莲便受到了茱莉亚的死讯，在悲痛之中，莉莲明白，自己还有未完成的任务。。
