抗日烽火四燃，江南两大望族民族实业家裴义山和洋买办秦约翰的商战也是一触即发。裴氏为支持抗战，在重庆筹建油厂，此事成功，将给以洋油代理为本的秦约翰以重大打击，秦约翰如坐针毯。 裴氏女主人公梅汝雪沉浸在油厂即将建成的喜悦之中，裴义江望着嫂子梅汝雪，心里说不出是什么滋味。裴义江与梅汝雪从小青梅竹，但因奉父母之命，梅汝雪嫁给了裴义江的哥哥裴义山，裴义江也为了家庭利益，娶了军阀的女儿郭月娇为妻。裴义江心里始终不能割舍对梅汝雪的挚爱，一直默默地关注着她，这一切使得郭月娇大为恼怒，屡屡在家里挑起事端。 为了油厂扩建，裴义山去敌占区上海接运设备，途中不幸遇难。梅汝雪临危受命，遵照先夫遗嘱，以柔弱的肩膀挑起了裴氏家业的重担。这使踌躇满志欲接管裴氏的裴义江极为受挫，但对梅汝雪的爱意使他委屈求全，决定不计名份协助大嫂。期间裴氏的宿敌－买办资本家秦约翰屡施毒计，使裴氏险遇灭...。意外捡到一个美貌女仆，是一种什么样的体验？ 这个女仆银发红瞳，宛若光明女神。 好像有点幸福？但是，这个女仆怎么是个大魔王？ 这跟说好的不一样啊喂？！。Disarmingly realistic in its depiction of the realities of frontier life, Heartland is a strong antidote to the cliches of traditional Westerns. This semi-documentary slice of life is based on the diaries of Elmore Randall Stewart about her days on the Wyoming frontier in the early 20th century. It's a strongly feminist statement about a woman raising her small daughter alone and scrapping for a living by working for a shy Scottish rancher. Director Richard Pearce brings an endearing touch to a film that is helped greatly by the dazzling cinematography of Fred Murphy. Conchata Ferrell and Rip Torn star in this small film that substitutes veracity for a high-powered plot. Pearce worked as a cinematographer on Woodstock and other documentaries before making his directorial debut. Winner of the 1980 Berlin Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival。
